386. Dan Levi. Out-of-Home’s Surprising Strength.
Gabriella Mirabelli

In this episode, Dan Levi, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Clear Channel Outdoor, discusses the results of a five-year study conducted with Kantar that highlight the effectiveness of out-of-home (OOH) advertising. At a time when ad-free subscriptions, fragmented media habits, and declining digital returns make it harder for brands to connect with audiences, the findings show OOH is outperforming other channels across critical brand metrics.

The research suggests OOH is no longer a peripheral channel. It is a measurable, scalable, and performance-driven medium that delivers consistent results, making it a critical component of modern marketing strategies.

Key takeaways include:

  • Proven measurability: Once considered difficult to track, OOH campaigns can now be measured with precision through Clear Channel’s Radar platform, capturing impact from awareness to conversion.

  • Superior performance: Compared with digital, connected TV, and linear television, OOH scored higher on metrics including ad awareness, message association, brand favorability, and purchase intent.

  • Complementary impact: When added to media plans, OOH boosts the effectiveness of other channels, enhancing the overall performance of a campaign rather than replacing existing investments.

  • Flexible scale: OOH works for both multinational brands and local businesses, with strategies tailored to budget, audience, and market size.

  • Creative best practices: Effective creative relies on simplicity—one strong image and minimal words—while also adapting to context, such as the difference between a Times Square billboard and a highway placement.

  • Full-funnel results: While powerful at building awareness and intent, OOH has also been shown to drive lower-funnel behaviors such as app downloads, online orders, and TV viewership.

  • Organic amplification: Billboards frequently generate additional reach as consumers and celebrities share images of them on social media, creating earned impressions at no added cost.
