316. YPulse. Understanding Young Consumers & Gaming.
Gabriella Mirabelli

Gaming is a major part of young consumers' lives, capturing significant attention and interest. In today’s episode, MaryLeigh Bliss, the Chief Content Officer at YPulse, discusses their latest report on Gen Z and Millennial gaming behaviors. The interview provides a comprehensive understanding of the current landscape of gaming among young consumers. It highlights the importance of gaming in their daily lives, its influence on other media and behaviors, and the potential for brands to effectively engage with this demographic through immersive and interactive experiences.

Key Insights:

  • Widespread Participation in Gaming: Almost all young people, 96% of those aged 13 to 39, engage in gaming. Among teenagers (13-17 years), the participation rate is even higher at 99%. This trend is consistent with last year’s data, indicating a stable gaming culture among youth.

  • Gender Distribution in Gaming: While 99% of men aged 13 to 39 play games, the participation among women in the same age group is also significant at 94%. This data dispels the myth that gaming is predominantly a male activity.

  • Gaming vs. Traditional Entertainment: Young people, especially teenagers, are spending more time gaming than watching TV shows or movies. For instance, 13 to 17-year-olds spend more hours playing games on computers and consoles than watching TV.

  • Social Aspects of Gaming: Contrary to the stereotype of gamers being socially isolated, many young people socialize while gaming. About half of the 13 to 39-year-olds hang out with friends in person while playing, and another half do so virtually.

  • Integration of Gaming and Social Media: There is a significant overlap between gaming and social media. Young people use platforms like Discord to chat while gaming, and they watch gaming content on YouTube and TikTok.

  • Influence of Gaming on Other Media: Video games are increasingly influencing other forms of entertainment. A large percentage of young people find video games more entertaining than TV shows and movies, and they are more likely to watch content based on video games.

  • Music Discovery through Gaming: Video games are a major source of music discovery for young people. About 65% of 13 to 39-year-olds discover new music through games, with this trend being particularly strong among men.

  • The Metaverse and Gaming: Many aspects of the metaverse are already present in popular games like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox. These platforms are where young people spend significant amounts of time, engaging in activities that mirror the metaverse concept.

  • Immersive Gaming Experiences: About 41% of young people play games involving virtual worlds, with this number rising to 48% among teenagers. These immersive experiences provide unique advertising opportunities for brands.

  • Advertising in Gaming: In-game advertisements are highly effective. Among 18 to 24-year-olds, ads seen in video games are more likely to influence purchases than those seen on cable TV. This highlights gaming as a crucial platform for reaching young consumers.

  • Purchasing Behaviors Influenced by Gaming: Gaming influences various purchasing behaviors, including fashion. Young people are inspired by the styles they see in games, and some even buy real-world versions of digital items.

  • Acceptance of AI in Gaming: Young consumers are generally open to the use of AI in gaming, especially when it enhances creativity and interactivity. There is a preference for AI to create interactive worlds and allow players to generate their own experiences.
