Today we’re speaking to George Washington University Professor and avid soccer fan Peter Loge about his new book Soccer Thinking for Management Success: Lessons for Organizations from the World’s GameDuring our conversation, we examine how (and why) breaking down and harnessing the game’s mechanics is the secret to succeeding in business, politics, and everything in between. We also unpack this year’s World Cup, talk about the importance of making decisions and solving problems on the fly, reveal why a unified team will always trump a single superstar, and so much more.

Topics include:

  • Why a team without a plan will always fail

  • Mistaking motion for action (and why it matters)

  • How organizations can push beyond just being the best

  • Why great leaders are always teaching their team members

  • Why the best doers are not always the best coaches (and vice versa)

  • Lessons on leadership from Ben Olsen and Wayne Rooney

  • How to recognize when you’re being beaten by someone faster

  • Why you don’t have to be a soccer fan to gain insights from his book
