Listen to full episode :

While working full-time in a successful career in the film, media, and advertising industries, Jim Aleski also served as a volunteer firefighter. He then pivoted to a full-time position as a firefighter/EMT, as well as carrying over his media experience serving as the Communications Director for the Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey. During our discussion, we explore the common ground between these industries, and talk about how Jim’s experiences on film sets have informed his work on the scene. We also unpack the vital skill of prioritizing, and reveal what it really takes to maintain an unflappable attitude and make quick decisions under pressure.

Topics include:

  • How media skillsets translate to emergency scenarios

  • The role of social media in emergency services

  • The interesting parallels between emergency services and work in the media business

  • How to adapt to the unknown (and lack of control) within a firefighting team

  • How Jim became interested and involved in social media

  • The relationship between relief and the growth of social media usage

  • Managing the free-ranging, chaotic nature of online communication

  • Looking forward to the future of branding for the fire service

Jim Aleski has over 20 years of experience in the fire service and is a Firefighter EMT with the Cherry Hill (NJ) Fire Department (CHFD) and the Social Media Director of the Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey (PFANJ), a state level organization of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). He holds a Master of Science in Fire and Emergency Management Administration from Oklahoma State University and a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications from Emerson College.
